lick: Whitetail deer lick branches during breeding season to communicate with other deer.

long gun: Refers to rifles and shotguns, and historically, muskets.

machine gun: Type of firearm that can shoot continuously and rapidly by cranking the device in old designs, or in more modern designs by pulling the trigger. The action of the recoil loads another round that is ready to be fired. Machine guns are mounted so that the guns are stationary.
 
Master Hunter (MH): An American Kennel Club title given to a dog that passes the Master Hunter test. A dog with a Master Hunter title is considered a versatile hunting dog.

Master Hunting Retriever (MHR): A North American Hunting Retriever Association title given to a hunting retriever that passes its Senior test.

matchlock: Type of firearm whose gunlock is started by matches or wicks. Matchlocks were used in early muskets.

musket: A shoulder gun that is loaded through the muzzle.

muzzle: The end part of a gun barrel where the gun discharges. Some older guns were loaded at the muzzle.
 
NAFC National Amateur Field Champion: An organization offering competitive field tests for retrievers.

NFC National Field Champion: An American Kennel Club title awarded to the winner of the national open.

nock: The end of an arrow, which is forked to hold the arrow to the bowstring.

nocturnal: Describes animal activity at night.

NRA National Rifle Association: A U.S. organization that promotes personal firearm and hunting rights.

omnivore: An animal that eats both plants and meat.
