paintball gun: Also known as a paintball marker; uses compressed gas to shoot paintballs at targets.

paintball marker: See paintball gun.

paintball: Capsule filled with water-soluble substances and dyes that is used in the paintball sport.

pedigree: The documented record of a dog's ancestry.

peep sight: A sight placed on a bowstring.

pheromone: Chemicals produced by animals for communication.

pistol: See handgun.

poaching: Killing an animal illegally, including hunting outside of hunting season, hunting without a permit, or hunting an endangered species.

Pope and Young: A system used to score animals killed by bow hunters.

pump action: Rifles, shotguns or paintball guns that require the handgrip to be pumped to eject used rounds and inject new rounds of ammunition into the firing chamber.

pump-action: Describes guns where a fired shell's casing is ejected and the next shell chambered by "pumping" the fore-end of the gun back and forth.

quiver: A carrying container for arrows.

rack: A set of antlers.

revolver: Type of firearm that uses cylinders with chambers to hold cartridges. As the revolver is shot, the cylinder rotates in double-action guns, cocking the trigger and positioning another round into the firing chamber. Single-action revolvers must be re-cocked to rotate the cylinder housing to prepare the gun to be fired again. Most revolvers have cylinders with six chambers.

round: See cartridge.

ruminants: Animals such as deer, which have four-chambered stomachs.

rut: The six-month breeding season when bucks compete for does.

safety: Designed to make a gun temporarily inoperable.

semi-automatic: Type of firearm that requires the shooter to fire the trigger every time that the gun is shot. The gun automatically chambers the next round until the cartridges are all shot.

SH Senior Hunter: An American Kennel Club title awarded to dogs that pass the Senior Hunt Test.

sire: A puppy's father.

Started Hunting Retriever (SHR): A United Kennel Club / Hunting Retriever Club title given to inexperienced dogs that attain 10 points and pass four started tests.

Started Retriever (SR): A North American Hunting Retriever Association title awarded to dogs who pass the Started Hunter Retriever Test, a field test for dogs early in their training.

submachine gun: Type of firearm that combines features of the machine gun and cartridges. Between the size of a machine gun and a pistol, a submachine gun fires automatically. Some models can be fired both automatically and semi-automatically.
